How to Pray
If you are new to prayer, it can seem a little awkward at first but God loves you and simply wants to talk with you as a child talks with a loving, attentive father.
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 (NLT)
Sometimes prayer is challenging because we don’t know what to talk about. So, we fall into the trap of rushed prayers, focusing on our immediate needs. Jesus’ first followers were confused about prayer because the religious leaders of their day were very poor models when it came to prayer. One day they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. In this famous prayer, called the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus offers a framework that can guide our prayers.
First read the Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13, then use the following outline to guide your prayers.
Six Parts of Prayer
1. Praise: Begin by expressing your love to God (Matthew 6:9)
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name”
2. Purpose: Commit yourself to God’s purpose and will for your life (Matthew 6:10)
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
3. Provision: Ask God to provide for your needs. (Matthew 6:11)
“Give us today our daily bread.”
4. Pardon: Ask God to forgive your sins (Matthew 6:12)
“And forgive us our sins…”
5. People: Pray for other people (Matthew 6:12)
“…as we have forgiven those who sin against us.”
6. Protection: Ask for spiritual protection (Matthew 6:13)
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
Daily Prayer Focus Ideas
Sunday – For spiritual renewal
As you begin the week, pray that God would open your eyes and your heart to Him more. Pray He gives you the discipline to read His Word and pray each day during 21 Days of Prayer and that He uses this time to grow you spiritually. Pray that He would use your time of fasting to develop this deep, satisfying connection with Him and pray for ONE.
Monday – Our needs
Ask God to provide and believe that He is at work in your finances, and relationships, and your health. He cares about every aspect of your life. Pray for ONE.
Tuesday – Our family
Ask God to do miracles of healing and provision in the lives of your family and friends. Pray for God’s blessing on your family (spouse, children, grandchildren, grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins, etc.) Pray that God helps to mend broken relationships with family members and pray for ONE.
Wednesday – Pray for ONE
Pray for one. ANYONE! Tell God you don’t care who it is. Just ask for ONE! One opportunity to express the love of God. One person you can invite with you to church. A general prayer for One will put you on high alert for who God might put before you each day. Life gets exciting when you are on the steady lookout for opportunities to express God’s love.
Make praying for ONE a part of your prayer everyday, but today spend a little more focused time on your ONE.
Thursday – Be thankful
Make each Thursday a “Thankful Thursday!” Praise God as the One Who provides for you. Think of all the ways – big and small – that God has blessed you this day…this week…this year and thank Him for the blessings. Pick 3 people you’re especially thankful for and pray for them by name. Pray for ONE.
Friday – Our nation, state and county leaders
Pray for America, President Donald Trump as he continues to lead the country. Pray for the Congress, the Supreme Court, and other leaders of our country. Pray for Florida, Governor Rick Scott and the leaders of our state. Pray for Broward County, county and city elected officials, our schools, police and fire departments. Pray for ONE.
Saturday – Our church
Pray for Community Christian Church and the ministry that will take place in 2018. Pray for Pastor Scott Eynon and our entire team of pastors, Elders, and ministry directors. Pray that God guides our staff and Elders as they lead our church family.
Pray for all the missionaries and mission organizations we support as they teach the gospel and share the love of Jesus all around the world. Pray for those considering going on our 2018 Mission Trips to El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Kenya. Pray for our local Community Impact partners and the very real difference they are trying to make in the lives of those in Broward County.
Pray for ONE.
